The first-ever logo design Google used was too bizarre

Do you know that Google was first known as BackRub in 1996? The typography of the logo also said the same. The name of the company referred to the technology, called backlink tracking. Users at that time didn’t have much technical know-how, so the end-user experience was pretty much an unknown concept.

In 1997, Larry Page and Sergey Brin decided to name the company Googol, which denotes a large number. They mistakenly registered the domain name Google.

1996: The first logo

In 1996, Larry Page and Sergey Brin launched a web crawler known as BackRub, whose primary function was to find results through backlinks. They changed the company name in 1997 to Google, which is a spelling mistake of ‘Googol’. Googol refers to the number 10 with the power of hundreds. The concept behind such naming was to tell users that they would get googols of results by searching through this search engine.

1998: The first real Google logo

According to some resources, the 1998 Google logo design was created by Brin, who used a free image editor known as GIMP during the process. This design was not much polished, but the users didn’t ask for more, either. This design also used the exclamation mark by taking inspiration from Yahoo.

1999-2010: Logo designs by Ruth Kedar

A mutual friend of Brin and Page referred them to a Stanford assistant professor named Ruth Kedar. They asked Ruth if she could come up with some iconic logo design ideas. She designed a series of Google logos, starting from black, and then using vibrant colors to create all other logos in the series.

The final design that Ruth came up with was a bit more minimal with vibrant colors, but it was by no means a flat design. Yet, the simplicity of this design started a trend of minimalist Iconic Logos. This design remained there from 1999 to 2010. Google updated the logo design by changing the color of ‘o’ from yellow to orange.

2015: A new logo

Google designers from across the US gathered in New York City for a weeklong Design Sprint to create a new logo to boost the branding process.

This sprint resulted in a dramatic change in the Google logo design. The color pattern of the logo design remained the same, but they changed the font from Catull to Product Sans, which is pretty much a schoolbook-inspired font family.

Google also launched the short form of its logo, consisting of the letter ‘G’. This logo generally appears in smartphone apps, and it usually accompanies Google voice search.

The versatility of Product Sans allows developers to make any size-related changes to the log without worrying about the dimensions getting out of proportion. In other words, it is much like a fun logo.

Dynamic Logo

The best thing about the modern Google logo is that it is dynamic. Starting voice search through Google on your mobile or tablet will bring up bouncing Google dots, representing the voice search’s readiness.

These dots turn into an equalizer the moment you start speaking. The equalizer transforms back into the dot structure when you are finished speaking.

According to the Google design team, they developed an entire range of expressions, such as thinking, listening, confirmation, and incomprehension. It may be just a matter of time when these services, along with the said expressions, will be a part of the Google service.

Google Doodle

The concept of Google Doodle is as old as Google’s search engine. Page and Sergey created the first Doodle when they were attending the Burning Man festival. The sign of this festival was inserted in the background of the second ‘o’ of the Google logo.

Today, doodles are more useful to deliver messages related to different occasions, including birthdays and death anniversaries of important figures and celebrities.

Google even uses a doodle to wish birthday to its members. It is more of a personalized touch. Google, in 2015, announced that it has over 2000 doodles for different homepages that appear in different parts of the world. This number climbed to 4000 by 2016.

The good thing is that Google encourages its users to contribute to Doodle development by submitting ideas. Being open to suggestions and using a progressive approach has allowed Google to have the best online logo design.
